How to specify a goods lift: load, car size and doors
A goods lift is specified from what it has to carry, not just how much it weighs. Start with the largest item or pallet, the handling equipment that enters the car, the rated load with a margin for that equipment, then the door width and type the loading route needs. Specify in this order
- The largest load: item or pallet dimensions, including height
- Handling equipment entering the car, such as pallet trucks or trolleys, and its own weight
- Rated load, with margin for the handling equipment and not only the goods
- Car internal dimensions and car height
- Clear door opening width and door type, matched to the loading route
- Number of stops and which sides need doors
Protection and finishes that matter
- Stainless steel or heavy-duty car walls and skirting
- Hard-wearing car flooring suited to wheeled loads
- Door and frame protection at the loading level
- Lighting and car ventilation appropriate to the goods carried

What rated load should I choose?
Add the heaviest goods to the weight of the equipment that drives into the car, then allow a margin. A pallet truck alone can add a significant share of the load, which is why goods lifts are often specified a step above the goods weight.
Can a goods lift carry passengers?
Goods lifts are specified for materials. Where authorised attendants must travel with the load, tell us at the enquiry stage so the lift and its fittings are specified accordingly.
Do you supply goods lifts for existing buildings?
Yes, where there is a suitable shaft or space to build one. We survey the building, confirm the dimensions against the car you need and quote the lift plus the civil works the contractor prepares.
